UFO Reports Spike in First Days of 2012

2012 is starting off with a surge in UFO reports from around the world. The Huffington Post’s Lee Speigel interviewed Clifford Clift, the international director of the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON), the largest UFO investigation organization in the US. Clift told Speigel: “For the entire month of January 2011, MUFON recorded around 500 reports, and we’re already up to 233 after just the first week of 2012.”

Peter Davenport, commercial pilot and founder of the National UFO Reporting Center (NUFORC), says he has also seen an increase in reports. He told Fox News in Orlando, “We took 110 reports on New Years Eve, 13 of them are from Florida. Something is going on. I think it has picked up dramatically.”

Clift and Davenport both say some of the witnesses have been able to snap pictures from their cell phones, although Davenport points out that cell phone images are of low quality. He advises UFO witnesses to grab a high quality camera if they have one and stabilize it as best as possible when taking the picture.

Speigel discovered that weather website, WeatherWatch.co.nz, has also received a significant increase in reports of “strange lights” and “UFOs” since the New Year. WeatherWatch.co.nz credits most of the sightings to 2012 “hysteria” and misidentifications. They write:

WeatherWatch.co.nz believes most people witnessed meteors, or shooting stars, Chinese lanterns (Which appear as slow moving orange lights) and other normal aircraft such as helicopters and planes.

However, one of their witnesses disagrees:

Nikki B from Arizona wrote “how can we see it here in Arizona and people in Africa and Australia are seeing the same thing?  2012 vibration is freakin me out already!  …I know the news will have some “reasonable and logical explanation” but i’m not buying it!”

As for whether impending doom is truly imminent for 2012, Davenport says he does not give any credence to the idea that 2012 is anything special, although he jokes: “I appear to be one of very few UFO investigators who can not see the future events clearly. I just don’t know what is going to happen.”
